Description: In our opinion, if there ever was a global tree, a tree that belongs in any place in the world where humans live because of its history, its beauty, its toughness, and its fitting in of most any growing situation among humans, the Ginkgo tree would be our pick. The Ginkgo is a living fossil and has survived for over 270 million years. It is the oldest living tree species we know of and has survived several mass extinction events on the planet. If you’re wanting a tree that is safe to live around, take this into consideration when thinking about the Ginkgo, six Ginkgo trees survived in the center of a nuclear bomb blast in 1945 at Hiroshima, Japan and they still grow today. The Ginkgo tree is incredibly strong, it’s roots are not aggressive, and it will produce an abundance of shade. In the fall, any Ginkgo tree is the talk of the neighborhood as the trees turn bright neon yellow for weeks and then one cool fall day, they will all drop from the tree in a single 24 hour event forming a beautiful yellow carpet. We can’t say enough good things about the Ginkgo tree, it is one our favorite trees, especially in an urban setting.

Growing Considerations: This variety is a male tree variety and will not produce fruit which many complain about the putrid smell produced when the fruit ripen. Plant this tree where it can get big. Give it plenty of space and full sun. It is drought tolerant but don’t neglect it during extreme droughts, especially during the first two years of its life after transplant. The Ginkgo is adaptable in most any soils. Ginkgos are known to live a very long time, for generations, so do your best to plant this tree where it can become glorious for the future.
